Woman in wheelchair struck, killed in Ocala crash, police say

A pedestrian in a wheelchair was killed after she was struck by a car while crossing a road on Saturday, according to the Ocala Police Department.

Police said they responded to the 4500 block of NW Blitchton Rd around 9:15 p.m. after reports of a crash.

During an investigation, police determined that the driver of the Mazda was traveling east on NW Blitchton Road in the inside lane before the crash.

At the same time, a pedestrian in a wheelchair was crossing NW Blitchton Road.

Police said this resulted in the Mazda striking the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital but was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Police said the Mazda driver remained at the scene.

"Our hearts go out to the victim's loved ones during this difficult time," said the Ocala Police Department.

This crash remains under investigation.
